Ashbel Green Brown (1821-1906) of Granville County, NC, entered the University in 1840, became a member of the Philanthropic Society, and graduated with second honors in 1843. He served as a tutor of ancient languages in 1844, received the MA in 1846, and eventually was promoted to adjunct professor. Brown left the University in 1856.
